Borussia Dortmund has announced that Mats Hummels has agreed to a one-year contract extension with the club. The central defender will continue to represent Dortmund until the end of the upcoming season, as confirmed by the club through their social media platforms.

As the team captain, Hummels stands a chance to lift the Meisterschale this weekend if Dortmund secures a victory against Mainz, which would secure their first Bundesliga title since 2012. Despite being 34 years old, Hummels has been a key figure in Dortmund's campaign, featuring in 29 out of 33 Bundesliga matches this season. However, there is a possibility that he might miss the final game due to a head injury sustained during their triumph over Augsburg on Sunday.

Having previously played a crucial role in Dortmund's triumphs during the 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons, Hummels went on to win three additional titles after joining Bayern Munich in 2016. Since his return to Dortmund in 2019, the team has been unable to dethrone Bayern. Nonetheless, they are on the verge of emulating the success achieved by Jurgen Klopp's legendary Dortmund side from the early 2010s.
