Barcelona's young midfielder Gavi faced a tough blow during Spain's Euro 2024 qualifier against Georgia on Sunday night, as he sustained a serious knee injury. The 19-year-old, a key presence in La Roja's lineup alongside Rodri from Manchester City and Fabian Ruiz from Paris Saint-Germain, experienced the injury while trying to control the ball.

Although Spain had already secured their spot in the top two of Group A alongside Scotland, ensuring their participation in the upcoming tournament, coach Luis de la Fuente fielded a strong lineup featuring players like Jose Gaya and Dani Carvajal. Centre-back Robin Le Normand, one of the two players retained from the previous victory in Cyprus, scored an early goal for the hosts.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia from Napoli equalized for Georgia in the 10th minute, and shortly thereafter, Gavi suffered his injury. Despite leaving the pitch with assistance from the team's physio, it was evident that Gavi couldn't continue playing. In the second half, Ferran Torres, Gavi's Barcelona teammate, put Spain back in the lead and paid tribute to Gavi by holding up his jersey in celebration.

A later own goal from Luka Lochoshvili secured a 3-1 victory for Spain, placing them four points ahead of Scotland in Group A. Following the match in Valladolid, it was confirmed that Gavi had suffered a serious anterior cruciate ligament injury. The 19-year-old is set to undergo detailed examinations back at Barcelona on Monday to determine the specific timeline for his recovery.
