In 2015, after being out with an injury, Sheamus felt his character had gone stale. He wanted to make a bold comeback, so he decided to reinvent himself completely. That’s when he came up with the mohawk and braided beard combo, a decision he made entirely on his own without running it by WWE management.
Speaking with Chris Van Vliet on the Insight podcast, Sheamus confirmed the long-standing rumor that he just went for it.
“The great thing about that was I pissed the brass off on that one, because I didn’t ask for permission, I just did it,” he said. “I think I’d been off with an injury and just felt stagnant. I’d been doing that babyface thing for a while and I thought, I need something different and cool. So I did it, and I think Vince was pissed big time because I didn’t tell him.”
Sheamus was convinced the new look would make him come across as a “bleeding Bum, butt kicker,” expecting cheers when he stepped back into the ring. Instead, his return in Chicago took an unexpected turn when the crowd broke out into a loud “You look stupid” chant.
“I’d done the beard, the braids, the whole thing, and I thought I looked cool. I looked badass. I thought people were going to say this guy looks awesome. I walked out, and then some bollocks in the crowd started a ‘You look stupid’ chant, and it spread across the whole arena. I was like this is not what I was expecting. It wasn’t the reaction I was going for. But it was great. I leaned into it and it ended up being a lot of fun.”
