In the first innings, India put up a strong total of 357-8 in their 50 overs. Sri Lanka, however, struggled and were all out for only 55 runs in just 19.4 overs, extinguishing any faint hopes they had of making it to the semi-finals. Initially, Sri Lanka's decision to put India into bat seemed smart when Rohit Sharma was dismissed for just four runs after facing two balls. However, it soon became evident that Sri Lanka had a formidable challenge ahead of them.
Shubman Gill led the way with an impressive 92 runs, followed by Virat Kohli with 88 and Shreyas Iyer with 82, who smashed six maximums in his 56-ball inning. Ravindra Jadeja added 35 runs from 24 balls towards the end of the Indian innings, setting Sri Lanka a target of 358 runs to win. Dilshan Madushanka was the standout bowler for Sri Lanka, taking 5 wickets for 80 runs.
Sri Lanka had a disastrous start in their chase, with their top five batsmen scoring just one run each, resulting in a score of 3-4. Mohammed Siraj wreaked havoc, taking 5 wickets for 18 runs, and he received support from Jasprit Bumrah (1-8) and Mohammed Shami (3-16).
Sri Lanka's innings were saved from becoming the worst in Cricket World Cup history by Angelo Mathews (12), Maheesh Theekshana (12*), and Kasun Rajitha (14), all of whom reached double figures.
With this victory, India secured a place in the top three of the standings, while Sri Lanka found themselves in seventh place with just two matches remaining and a negative net run-rate.
