xavi simons to return to PSG
PSV Eindhoven has announced that Dutch midfielder Xavi Simons will be returning to Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) after spending just one year in the Eredivisie. The 20-year-old had initially struggled to make an impact in Paris and chose to return to his homeland last summer, where he flourished under the guidance of Ruud van Nistelrooy.

During his time at PSV, Simons put up an impressive performance, recording 22 goals and 12 assists in 48 games while helping the club secure the KNVB Beker and Dutch Super Cup. His standout performance in the Eredivisie, with 19 goals in 34 matches, made him the league's second-highest scorer, following FC Utrecht's Anastasios Douvikas, who scored 20 goals.

Upon joining PSV last year, Simons signed a five-year contract, but PSG had a buyback clause set at a modest €6m (£5.2m) in his contract. Despite interest from English Premier League clubs like Arsenal, Chelsea, and Liverpool, Simons had played down the possibility of leaving PSV during the current transfer window.

Now, PSG has exercised their buyback option, giving Simons a second chance at the Parc des Princes. PSV has confirmed his departure from their training camp as he finalizes his return to PSG. The young midfielder previously made 11 appearances for PSG's senior team between 2019 and 2022, having left Barcelona's renowned academy to join the French giants.

Simons is set to undergo his medical and sign his contract with PSG today. However, journalist Fabrizio Romano suggests that he might be loaned out for the 2023-24 season if Kylian Mbappe and Neymar both remain at the club. But if either or both of them leave, Simons will stay in Paris. PSG is keen to sell Mbappe due to his contract situation, but the player has indicated his intention to stay until 2024.

The young Dutch talent will be PSG's seventh signing in a busy summer transfer window, joining the likes of Lucas Hernandez, Cher Ndour, Lee Kang-in, Milan Skriniar, Marco Asensio, and Manuel Ugarte at the club.

Simons displayed versatility in various positions for PSV last season, primarily playing as a left-winger in the latter half of the campaign after previously excelling as a number 10 and center-forward.

His stay at PSG depends on if both Mbappe & Neymar don't leave this season
