Athletic Bilbao's forward, Nico Williams, seems set to join Barcelona as a free agent once his contract with San Mames ends in June. There's been a lot of talk about the 21-year-old's future lately, with Athletic trying to secure a new contract for him before his current one expires in the summer of 2024.

Recent reports suggested that Williams was close to signing a new deal with Athletic, possibly with a reduced release clause, hinting at a potential transfer at the end of the season. However, journalist Enric Canyellas now reveals that the Spanish international has indeed agreed to move to Barcelona on a free transfer next summer, choosing not to continue with Athletic. This move mirrors Inigo Martinez's departure from Athletic to Barcelona earlier this summer on a free transfer.

Several clubs, including Real Madrid, Manchester United, Liverpool, Brighton & Hove Albion, Aston Villa, and Paris Saint-Germain, had shown interest in Williams. He had a rich history with Athletic, progressing from the youth system to the first team and making his debut in 2021.

In his time with the Lions, Williams made 91 appearances, scoring 12 goals and providing 11 assists. While he's yet to score in the 2023-24 La Liga season, he's contributed with four assists in six appearances. Williams, a 10-time Spain international, was included in the recent Spain squad for the Euro 2024 qualification matches against Scotland and Norway but had to withdraw due to injury, alongside Barcelona's Alejandro Balde.
