According to reports, Kylian Mbappe is willing to spend the entire 2023-24 season on the bench in order to remain at the Parc des Princes this summer. Last year, the French international surprised many by rejecting a move to Real Madrid and instead chose to extend his contract with PSG, which is set to expire in less than a year.

While Mbappe's contract includes an option to extend until 2025, he has now sent a surprising letter to PSG, informing them that he will not exercise that clause. This puts PSG at risk of losing Mbappe on a free transfer next year, prompting the club to actively work on selling him during the current transfer window to avoid this undesirable outcome.

Club president Nasser Al-Khelaifi has made it clear that Mbappe will not be allowed to leave for nothing, but the striker has repeatedly expressed his desire to see out the final year of his contract. PSG has reportedly set a price tag of €200 million (£170.4 million) for the Frenchman, making it unlikely for them to find a buyer this time around. Real Madrid, in particular, is expected to wait until 2024 to pursue Mbappe on a free transfer.

Should Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani's takeover bid for Manchester United succeed, the club has been linked with a potential move for Mbappe. However, it is believed that Arsenal is Mbappe's preferred destination in the Premier League, although the club may face financial constraints in affording his high wage demands.

As the standoff between Mbappe and PSG continues with no resolution in sight, RMC journalist Daniel Riolo has stated that Mbappe will likely remain with PSG for the upcoming season, even if the French champions threaten to relegate him to the bench for the entire campaign.

"Mbappe will be at PSG next season. Even if they [the PSG board] see this through to the end and bench him, Mbappe stays at PSG. He is ready to accept this situation," Riolo said.

"How did we come to this contractual situation? What is the way out? There is none. The only way for PSG is to play tough and tell Mbappe that, because he didn't renew, he will be benched all season."

In October of the previous year, just five months after Kylian Mbappe's contract renewal, reports emerged suggesting that the striker had expressed regret over his decision to extend his contract. It was reported that Mbappe felt betrayed due to broken promises made by PSG. Additionally, there were allegations of a strained relationship between Mbappe and Neymar, although these claims were denied by then-manager Christophe Galtier. Despite the off-field speculations, Mbappe continued to excel on the pitch throughout the season.

By the end of the 2022-23 campaign, Mbappe had amassed an impressive record of 41 goals and 10 assists from 43 appearances across all competitions. This outstanding performance not only solidified his position as the highest scorer in PSG history, surpassing Edinson Cavani, but also secured him another Ligue 1 Golden Boot with 29 goals in 34 matches.

Since joining PSG in 2017, Mbappe has contributed 212 goals and 98 assists in 260 games. However, it is worth noting that following a controversial interview, where Mbappe referred to the club as "divisive," as many as six players have reportedly expressed their grievances to PSG management.
