According to reports, Manchester United is prepared to ask for a substantial fee of up to £50m in order to part ways with their club captain, Harry Maguire, during this summer. Maguire's position in the starting lineup was quickly relinquished after struggling in the Red Devils' defeats to Brentford and Brighton & Hove Albion in the 2022-23 Premier League season.

In his absence, new signing from Ajax, Lisandro Martinez quickly established a solid partnership with Raphael Varane in the defensive line, becoming Erik ten Hag's preferred choice when both were fit. However, injuries to Martinez and Varane towards the end of the season seemed to present an opportunity for Maguire to reclaim a regular starting role. Nevertheless, Luke Shaw often filled in as a makeshift center-back alongside Victor Lindelof.

With England manager Gareth Southgate cautioning Maguire that his place in the Euro 2024 squad could be jeopardized if his playing situation does not improve, it was widely expected that Maguire would leave Old Trafford this summer.

However, as the Manchester Evening News reports, with Maguire still having two years left on his contract, Manchester United has set a price tag of £50m on the defender.

While it is unlikely that Manchester United will be able to recover the full £80m they paid for the English international in 2019, the club hopes to recoup over half of that record-breaking fee.

The report also suggests that finding a buyer willing to meet the £50m asking price is highly unlikely, which could result in Maguire remaining at Old Trafford for the 2023-24 season unless Manchester United reduces their demands.

Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United, and West Ham United have been linked with potential moves for Maguire, but these clubs are expected to be put off by Manchester United's valuation.

On a personal level, Maguire desires to stay and compete for his place under the management of Ten Hag, despite the likelihood of losing the captaincy ahead of the new season.
