On Tuesday, Manchester City and Bayern Munich will face off in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final clash. Despite both sides excelling in Europe, they have struggled to defend their domestic titles this season. City is still in the Premier League title race and won their eighth game in a row against Southampton over the weekend, scoring four goals and taking their tally to 31 in the last eight matches.

City's top scorer, Erling Haaland, has been back to full health and has netted 30 goals in the Premier League this season, but has lost all seven previous encounters against Bayern. City has won two of their three meetings against Bayern at the Etihad, while Bayern has kept just six clean sheets in their last 16 matches. Thomas Tuchel's task will be to tighten Bayern up defensively as they face one of the best attacking sides in Europe, led by a prolific forward.

Tuchel has a successful track record in this competition, having reached the 2020 and 2021 Champions League finals and recently eliminating City in the FA Cup semi-finals.

INJURIES & SUSPENSIONS

Almost all of Man City's squad will be available for selection in this match, with Phil Foden being the only player absent as he recovers from appendix surgery. Guardiola has maintained a consistent lineup in recent weeks and is unlikely to make many changes from the team that defeated Southampton. Bernardo Silva may take Riyad Mahrez's place, while the back three should remain the same, meaning Aymeric Laporte will once again be left out. John Stones is likely to continue in his midfield role instead of Kalvin Phillips.

Tuchel, on the other hand, will have to contend with a lack of fit natural center-forward options for Bayern, as Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting is expected to miss out due to a knee injury. Serge Gnabry could potentially be used in a central role, with Thomas Muller also an option. With Leon Goretzka returning to the team after being rested against Freiburg, Jamal Musiala could be pushed further forward, and Muller could be deployed as a striker. Kingsley Coman might replace Sadio Mane on the left flank.

POSSIBLE LINE-UPS

Manchester City possible starting lineup:
Ederson; Akanji, Ruben Dias, Ake; Stones, Rodri, Bernardo Silva, De Bruyne, Gundogan, Grealish; Haaland

Bayern Munich possible starting lineup:
Sommer; Pavard, De Ligt, Upamecano, Davies; Goretzka, Kimmich, Sane, Musiala, Coman; Muller

EXPERT PREDICTION

Manchester City 1-1 Bayern Munich

Manchester City have been in tremendous form lately, but they may face a tough challenge in this match. Bayern Munich have a solid record in their previous four visits to England, having won three of them, and they remain unbeaten in all eight of their Champions League matches this season. This sets up an exciting encounter between two of Europe's top teams.

Bayern (two goals conceded) and City (three) boast the two meanest defences in this season’s Champions League. FCB have in fact kept seven clean sheets in their eight fixtures, with both goals coming against Sven Ulreich when already in control in the 4-2 win away at Viktoria Plzen. That is obviously the most shutouts in the competition for 2022/23 and is followed by the Cityzens’ five (same as Inter Milan and Club Brugge). However, our quarter-final opponents have allowed the fewest shots per game (6.0).
