Liverpool are poised to make a move for Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak, but only once they get a signal that the Magpies are open to doing business, according to Reds transfer insider David Lynch.

The Reds are currently preparing to face J1 League side Yokohama F. Marinos on Wednesday, where fans could get their first look at new signing Hugo Ekitike. There’s also growing excitement around the possibility of Isak joining the squad, though Liverpool haven’t submitted a formal bid yet.

Speaking to Sports Mole, Lynch explained that Liverpool are essentially on standby:

“What I’m hearing is that the club is just waiting for the go-ahead from Newcastle to make a formal approach and begin serious discussions.”

He added that Liverpool know what they’re getting into. They’d likely need to break the British transfer record to land Isak, and they’re ready to do it. “It’s just a waiting game right now,” Lynch said.

“Liverpool are prepared, but it’s all down to when or if Newcastle decide they’re open to selling. That hasn’t happened yet, but things seem to be moving in that direction.”

With Florian Wirtz already arriving from Bayer Leverkusen in a deal potentially worth £116 million, Liverpool might need to dig even deeper. Newcastle reportedly value Isak at around £150 million, and if the Reds are serious about bringing the Swedish forward to Anfield, they’ll likely have to meet that asking price.
