Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi is reportedly having second thoughts about turning down a summer move to Liverpool after his team’s tough start to the season. Despite interest from Barcelona and Arsenal, the 25-year-old was close to joining Liverpool in a €60m (£50.5m) deal. However, he chose to stay with his boyhood club, Real Sociedad.

With only one win from their first six La Liga games this season, things haven’t gone as Zubimendi might have hoped. After scoring in the opening match against Rayo Vallecano a 2-1 loss Real Sociedad have since been beaten by Real Madrid and Mallorca without finding the back of the net. Now sitting 16th in the table with just four points from a possible 18, Zubimendi is reportedly reconsidering his decision.

According to Estadio Deportivo, Zubimendi has even reached out to Liverpool, expressing interest in a potential January transfer after becoming disillusioned with Real Sociedad’s sporting direction. The team lost key players like Mikel Merino to Arsenal and Robin Le Normand to Atletico Madrid over the summer, and they’ve struggled to replace them.

Zubimendi could still make the switch to Liverpool in January, as his €60m release clause remains intact. He hasn’t signed a new contract since the summer transfer saga, and his current deal runs until 2027.

The midfielder has made 194 appearances for Real Sociedad, scoring nine goals and providing seven assists, while also helping Spain win the European Championships this year. His strong connection to his boyhood club made it hard for him to leave, but the door to Liverpool may still be open.

Meanwhile, Liverpool have seen Ryan Gravenberch perform well in midfield, with Wataru Endo and Tyler Morton as backups. However, with questions surrounding their long-term futures, Zubimendi could still get his move to Anfield in January, even if it comes a few months later than originally planned.
