The family of the iconic German defender, Franz Beckenbauer, has announced his passing at the age of 78. Known as 'Der Kaiser' and a two-time Ballon d'Or winner, Beckenbauer, who holds the distinction of winning the World Cup both as a player and manager, succumbed to an illness on Sunday.

The official statement from Beckenbauer's family was shared with the German news agency dpa;
"It is with deep sadness that we announce that husband and father, Franz Beckenbauer, passed away peacefully in his sleep yesterday, Sunday, surrounded by his family. We ask that you be able to mourn in silence and refrain from asking any questions."

The Munich-born center-back left an indelible mark as one of the greatest defenders in football history. He played a pivotal role in West Germany's triumphant World Cup campaign in 1974, leading his team to victory over the Netherlands in the final and captaining the side.

Originally starting his career as a midfielder, Beckenbauer made a notable transition to a defensive role in the 1970s, achieving remarkable success as a sweeper. He accumulated 103 appearances for Germany, contributing 14 goals and 10 assists.

In addition to securing World Cup glory in 1974, Beckenbauer experienced the runner-up position in the 1966 edition, where Germany lost to England in the final, and earned a bronze medal in the 1970 tournament.

Beckenbauer's leadership extended to Euro 1972, where he captained Germany to victory. His achievements were further recognized with his first Ballon d'Or in the same year, and he repeated this feat in 1976. Additionally, he was honored as Germany's Footballer of the Year on four occasions.

A true product of Bayern Munich's youth academy, Franz Beckenbauer etched his legacy over a remarkable 13-year span as a senior player from 1964 to 1977. Within this tenure, he seized three European Cups, four Bundesliga titles, four DFB-Pokals, and an Intercontinental Cup. Beckenbauer's influence extended to 582 matches for the club, contributing 74 goals and 75 assists.

In 1977, his journey took him to the New York Cosmos in the United States, where he clinched victory in the North American Soccer League for three consecutive seasons. He later returned to Germany, joining Hamburger SV on a free transfer. His stint with Hamburg resulted in another Bundesliga crown in the 1981-82 season. A brief return to the NY Cosmos preceded his retirement from professional football in 1983.

Transitioning into coaching, Beckenbauer took the helm as the manager of the German national team just a year after concluding his illustrious playing career. His managerial success included leading West Germany to the final of the 1986 World Cup and securing a 1-0 victory over Argentina in the 1990 final, marking a unique achievement as both player and manager in the World Cup.

Post his departure from the German setup in 1990, Beckenbauer served as the manager and technical director at Marseille, achieving a Ligue 1 title.

Upon his return to Bayern in 1991, Beckenbauer managed the team in two separate stints, securing one Bundesliga crown and one UEFA Cup. His influence extended beyond the field as he assumed the role of president for Bayern for an impressive 15-year tenure from 1994 to 2009, subsequently being honored as Bayern's honorary president. His contributions also spanned roles as the vice-president of the German national team and a board member of FIFA.

Beckenbauer's remarkable career includes holding the record for the most consecutive matches played for the Germany men's team, featuring in 60 games from 1970 to 1977. His individual accolades encompass three FIFA World Cup All-Star team nominations, the FIFA Order of Merit in 1984, and a Laureus Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007.

In the latter part of his life, Beckenbauer faced scrutiny over involvement in a fraud and money laundering scandal related to the 2006 World Cup. However, the FIFA probe concluded in 2021 without a verdict due to the statute of limitations.
