The tragedy that has happened to football will probably take more than one generation to fix. And there's no guarantee.

The chances of football going further down the drain when it comes to quality is quite high, and what that also means is that in no distant future, we will have analysts heap praise on certain players and give them titles like GOAT not because they want to flex, but because they don't know any better.

Today, we already have peppersoup analysts pull up heat maps and passes completed as a prerequisite for a good player.

It doesn't matter whether some of the best passers of the ball, Xavi, KDB, Scholes, have come out to say how useless this statistics are, it will not count. For we have people who haven't watched better, and hence cannot know better.

And what this also does is give any regular Joe an accolade which, in the hayday of even the Clubs they represent, they wouldn't dream of clinching such titles.

Take Madrid for example, this is the worst Madrid squad when it comes to quality since I can remember... especially in the midfield. Even the Madrid squad that kept getting beat by Lyon in the quarter finals of the CL, had better quality on the bench than this current first eleven.

We're talking about a Madrid team that some of its surplus to requirement players became first team players in Clubs like Inter... and that was an Inter that was also star studded.

Even the Madrid midfield post Makelele, cannot feature any of these current players in the middle, and that Madrid fans cannot see that, for example, Jude Bellingham becoming a de facto player in its starting eleven is not just a testament of the players goodness but a dearth in quality in the squad, baffles me.

We are talking about a Madrid team that not so long ago, considered Sneijder surplus to requirement at the prime of his career, a Madrid team that considered Ozil surplus to requirement at the prime of his career, a Madrid team that sold Di Maria.

The two former players I just mentioned are better than Bellingham, and the latter - Di Maria, is better than Vinicius Jr. Take that to the Bank. And these players today, rule the roost.

Let me not get started with back in the day when Madrid really wore that title of Los Marengues with pride and joy, when Papa Flo inquired and tried to sign any quality player that moved, when their bench and not even their first eleven, reflected the true meaning of the word Galacticos.

In that Madrid team, Jude will be sent out on loan... or if he was in the squad, he'll be content with cameo appearances and playing in not so important games, Rodrygo will play with academy players before being sold out, and Vicinus will be understudying Figo and co, learning from the best.

In the engine room of its midfield, none of these current crops will make the grade. A midfield that could not guarantee Guti a regular place consistently, cannot house players like Camavinga and Tchoumeni. But this is where we currently are in football, and we must accept it and move on with it.

Who knows, one day in no distant future, a new analyst will look at the trophy of Camavinga and the fact that he played at Real Madrid, so he/she can confidently tell you that the is better than Michael Essien.

They will look at the glory days of Man City and tell you that Jack Grealish is on par with Ryan Giggs. And when they're done, they'll tell you Ancelotti is in the same League as Roberto Di Matteo, after all, they both have CL Trophy to their name.

We're almost there.

Scratch that, we're already there🥴
