Sevilla Football Club has officially announced the appointment of Diego Alonso as their new head coach. This decision comes in the wake of the recent departure of Jose Luis Mendilibar, who managed the team for just 28 matches.

Despite Mendilibar's previous success in leading Sevilla to an unexpected Europa League victory in the 2023-24 season, the club decided to part ways with the 62-year-old due to a disappointing start in the current season. Sevilla has garnered only eight points from their first eight matches in La Liga, placing them in the 14th position in the league standings as they head into the international break.

In a swift response, the club's leadership has acted quickly to find a replacement, and they have entrusted Diego Alonso with the responsibility of leading the team at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium.

Alonso, a former Uruguayan striker, is well-acquainted with the Spanish football landscape, having previously played for clubs like Valencia, Atletico Madrid, Racing Santander, and Malaga during his own playing career.

While his managerial career has taken him outside of Europe, with notable stints at Pachuca and Monterrey in Mexico, Alonso also had the opportunity to lead Inter Miami in Major League Soccer (MLS).

Although his tenure at the MLS side produced only seven wins out of 24 matches, he later had the honor of coaching the Uruguayan national team at the 2022 World Cup, even though his team did not progress to the knockout stages.

At 48 years of age, Diego Alonso is now tasked with revitalizing the talented Sevilla squad, and he is set to commence his duties with immediate effect under a contract that extends until the end of the season. The club has released a statement, which reads:
"We are delighted to announce that Diego Alonso has reached an agreement for the Uruguayan to become our new coach until the end of the current season.

"Alonso arrives at Nervion with his latest experience of having coached the national team of his country, with a coaching career that began at Club Atlético Bella Vista in Uruguay in 2011, where he managed 25 games, securing nine victories."
