Manchester United's Midfielder Bruno Fernandes has committed his future to the club by signing a new contract that will keep him at Old Trafford until June 2027, with an option for an additional year.

The 29-year-old Portugal midfielder has been a key player since his arrival from Sporting Lisbon in January 2020 for £47 million, amassing 79 goals and 67 assists in 234 appearances. His previous contract, signed in 2022, was set to expire in 2026.

Expressing his passion for the club, Fernandes said, "Everyone knows how much Manchester United means to me. I can see a bright future ahead and I’m eager to lead this team forward. Wearing this shirt comes with immense responsibility, and I’m fully committed to the dedication and desire it takes to represent this incredible club."

Fernandes took over as club captain from Harry Maguire in July 2023, a decision supported by United manager Erik ten Hag, even though Fernandes faced criticism from former United captains Gary Neville and Roy Keane at times.

Reflecting on his decision to renew his contract, Fernandes stated, "I wouldn’t have signed this contract if I didn’t believe my best moments in a United shirt are still ahead. I’ve already experienced so many special moments here like hearing my name chanted from the Stretford End, scoring a hat-trick against Leeds, leading the team on European nights at Old Trafford, and lifting trophies at Wembley."

He also noted that from his discussions with the club’s football leadership and manager, it’s evident that everyone is determined to fight for major trophies in the years to come.

While Fernandes wasn’t listed among the ‘untouchables’ the club refused to consider selling this summer, a transfer was only likely if an irresistible offer came in, which did not happen.

The player himself had expressed some uncertainty about his future before the FA Cup final in May, indicating that he wanted his expectations to align with those of the club.

Manchester United’s sporting director, Dan Ashworth, praised Fernandes as a "brilliant leader" who is instrumental in helping both players and staff perform at their best. Ashworth added, "Bruno has delivered consistently at a high level since joining Manchester United. His dedication to the club embodies what it takes to be a United player. He remains central to our ambitions, and we look forward to achieving the success this club demands with him at the forefront."
