Brazil defeated world champions Spain to secure a spot in the Olympic women's football final against the United States, echoing their 2008 showdown.

The match took a decisive turn early on when Spain's Irene Paredes scored an own goal, giving Brazil an unexpected lead. Just before halftime, Gabi Portilho doubled Brazil's advantage, leaving the heavily favored Spanish team stunned.

In the second half, Adriana netted a third goal for Brazil. This feat was even more impressive as they were playing without their all-time leading scorer, Marta, who was suspended after receiving a red card in the Group C match against Spain.

Spain managed to get on the scoreboard when Duda Sampaio inadvertently headed the ball into her net, but Brazil quickly dashed any hopes of a comeback. Kerolin broke away to score Brazil's fourth goal during the first of 15 added minutes. Salma Paralluelo scored a late consolation goal for Spain.

Spain will now compete against Germany for the bronze medal in Lyon on Friday
