Amir Khan handed two-year ban for failed drugs test (1 Viewer)

Amir Khan, the former professional boxer and Olympic medalist, has been banned from all sports for two years after failing a drug test. Khan tested positive for ostarine, a banned substance, after his fight with long-time rival Kell Brook in February 2022. UK Anti-Doping (UKAD) collected a urine sample from Khan after the fight, and the results returned an Adverse Analytical Finding (AAF) for ostarine. Ostarine is a selective androgen receptor modulator (SARM) and is prohibited in sport at all times.

UKAD notified Khan of the AAF on April 6, 2022, and issued him with a Provisional Suspension from all code-compliant sport on the same date. On July 20, 2022, UKAD charged Khan with two Anti-Doping Rule Violations (ADRVs): Presence of a Prohibited Substance and Use of a Prohibited Substance. Khan accepted the violations charged but maintained that his ingestion of ostarine was unintentional.

Khan's case was referred to the National Anti-Doping Panel to be considered by an independent tribunal. In its written decision dated February 21, 2023, the panel found both violations proved but concluded that Khan had established that they were not intentional within the meaning of the ADR. The panel imposed a two-year ban on Khan, which is deemed to have commenced on April 6, 2022, and will expire on April 5, 2024.

Khan announced his retirement soon after the defeat by Brook and has kept to that decision despite briefly hinting that he was considering remaining in the sport. He is a former unified light-welterweight world champion, having held the WBA (later Super) title from 2009 to 2012, and the IBF title in 2011.
