Currently, AC Milan sits in third place, trailing six points behind league leaders Inter Milan, showcasing a promising start to the season under Stefano Pioli's management. Maignan, a former PSG player, has not only become the primary keeper for AC Milan but has also claimed the title of France's first-choice goalkeeper, earning 13 caps since his debut in May 2019, replacing Hugo Lloris.
According to reports from Italian news outlet Foot Mercato, Maignan is a target for several high-profile European clubs in France, England, and Spain. PSG, Manchester United, Chelsea, and Real Madrid are reportedly monitoring the goalkeeper's situation closely.
While Maignan's current contract with AC Milan runs until the summer of 2026, negotiations for a new deal are ongoing. After an impressive 2022-23 season, the goalkeeper is seeking a substantial salary increase to reflect his progress since joining from Lille. However, talks between AC Milan and Maignan seem to be challenging, and there is a possibility that an agreement may not be reached.
In the event that a deal falls through, Manchester United, under the management of Erik ten Hag, is poised to pursue Maignan. The club had a busy summer focusing on finding a replacement for David de Gea, who left as a free agent after more than a decade at Old Trafford. Although Andre Onana joined from Inter for around £50m, the 27-year-old has made notable errors this season.
AC Milan is reportedly open to selling Maignan for around €70m (£60m) in the upcoming January transfer window or the following summer. Chelsea, led by Mauricio Pochettino, is also showing interest in the French goalkeeper, despite signing Robert Sanchez and Djordje Petrovic ahead of the 2023-24 season.
