Morton had been in talks with the Ligue 1 club earlier this month after struggling to secure regular first-team football at Anfield. With competition from Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister, and Curtis Jones, Morton found himself on the fringes during the first half of the 2024-25 season, before a shoulder injury sidelined him for the second half.
Despite the setback, he returned in time to help England’s Under-21s win the European Championship earlier this summer, notably assisting Jonathan Rowe’s winning goal in a dramatic 3-2 final against Germany.
Now, Morton and Rowe will find themselves on opposite sides of the pitch, with the Liverpool academy graduate making the move to Lyon, while Rowe plays for Marseille.
“Tyler Morton has completed a permanent transfer to Olympique Lyonnais from Liverpool,” read a statement from the club. “The 22-year-old agreed terms and finalised his switch to the Ligue 1 outfit on Tuesday.
“The move brings an end to the midfielder’s journey with the Reds that began at the age of seven and saw him rise through the Academy ranks to make 14 senior appearances. Everyone at LFC would like to wish Tyler all the very best for the future.”
In addition to the transfer fee, Liverpool have reportedly included a 20% sell-on clause as part of the deal. Morton will also get the chance to play in the Europa League with Lyon in the upcoming 2025-26 season.
Morton made his senior debut for Liverpool under Jürgen Klopp during the 2021-22 season, playing nine times across all competitions. He later gained valuable experience with loan spells at Blackburn Rovers and Hull City.
However, under new boss Arne Slot, Morton didn’t feature in the Premier League last season, managing just three appearances in the EFL Cup, along with a single outing in both the Champions League and FA Cup.
