Real Madrid is reportedly contemplating the idea of reuniting with Manchester United defender Raphael Varane. Varane had a remarkable tenure at Bernabeu from 2011 to 2021, amassing 360 appearances and securing three La Liga titles and four Champions League trophies.

Seeking a new challenge, Varane moved to Manchester United, where, despite adding an EFL Cup to his achievements, he has struggled to live up to expectations.

Under Erik ten Hag in the 2023-24 season, Varane initially spent time out of the starting XI but recently returned for key fixtures against Bayern Munich and Liverpool, contributing to a clean sheet in a goalless draw against the latter.

While Varane seems determined to fight for his place at Old Trafford rather than consider a transfer to another European club or Saudi Arabia, Real Madrid reportedly sees him as a potential January addition.

Real Madrid's defensive situation has been complicated by serious knee injuries to David Alaba and Eder Militao, leaving Carlo Ancelotti with limited options in the back. With only Antonio Rudiger and Nacho fit as central defenders, there are hints that midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni might deputize in the backline when needed.

In response to these challenges, there are reports that Real Madrid may contact Manchester United to negotiate a deal for Varane, who has less than 18 months remaining on his contract.

Although the exact fee that Manchester United might demand is unclear, there is a perceived need for the club to reduce its wage bill and generate income to facilitate significant additions in the upcoming transfer window.
