Real Madrid is reportedly eyeing Leeds United's Illan Meslier as a potential addition to their squad, prompted by Thibaut Courtois's ACL injury during pre-season. The 23-year-old goalkeeper has made a mark since his transition from French club Lorient to Leeds in August 2019. Meslier boasts an impressive record of 128 appearances for Leeds, spanning across both Premier League and second-tier campaigns.

In the previous season, Meslier participated in 34 matches for Leeds in the Premier League, during which the team faced relegation to the Championship, conceding the highest number of goals in the division – a total of 78 goals in 38 matches. The young keeper also holds a notable international background, with 11 appearances for France Under-21s since his debut in October 2019. However, he is yet to earn a senior call-up for the French national team.

Reports from Sport suggest that Real Madrid is contemplating a move for Meslier this summer, in response to Courtois's injury. The Belgian goalkeeper sustained a severe ACL injury during Real Madrid's pre-season preparations, raising concerns that he might miss the entire 2023-24 season.

Carlo Ancelotti reportedly seeks a high-quality goalkeeper to replace Courtois during his absence, and Meslier appears to be on the club's radar. Meslier featured in Leeds' Championship opener against Cardiff City, helping his team recover from a two-goal deficit to secure a draw at Elland Road.

Real Madrid's interest in goalkeepers extends beyond Meslier, as Sevilla's Yassine Bounou is also reportedly being considered. Bounou is believed to be pushing for a move to Real Madrid, and discussions are said to be ongoing between the two La Liga clubs. Real Madrid seems to favor Bounou due to his attributes similar to Courtois's. However, the concern lies in his potential absence at the Africa Cup of Nations at the beginning of 2024.

Sevilla is reportedly seeking €30 million (£25.8 million) for Bounou, who has made 140 appearances for the club since joining from Girona in September 2019.

Despite the transfer speculations, Meslier is expected to be on the field for Leeds when they face Birmingham City in the Championship. Meanwhile, Real Madrid might commence their La Liga campaign without a solid first-choice goalkeeper as they travel to Athletic Bilbao for their opening match of the season.
