Reports indicate that Barcelona's midfielder Pedri is facing a significant setback, potentially sidelining him for the remainder of the 2023-24 season as well as the upcoming European Championship this summer.

Pedri experienced a distressing moment when he had to leave the field during the later stages of the first half in Sunday's match against Athletic Bilbao due to a hamstring injury.

Initial estimates suggested a recovery period of five to six weeks, but according to Bar Canaletes, Barcelona doesn't foresee the 21-year-old's return for the rest of the season, ruling him out of participation in Euro 2024 for Spain as well. The club is reportedly urging Pedri to consider undergoing surgery, deeming it the most beneficial option for his long-term fitness.

Pedri has grappled with hamstring troubles during his tenure at Barcelona, enduring his lengthiest absence between September 2021 and January 2022. This season, he has been limited to just 24 appearances due to recurring hamstring issues, which also sidelined him earlier in the campaign.

Since joining Barcelona from Las Palmas in July 2020, Pedri has featured in 133 matches, contributing 18 goals and 12 assists to the team. His absence will undoubtedly pose a significant challenge for Barcelona's aspirations this season and leave a notable void in Spain's lineup for the upcoming tournament.

Following the match against Athletic, Barcelona manager Xavi addressed reporters, likely offering insights into the team's approach and concerns amidst Pedri's injury setback.
"He had trained very well this week, he was at a very high level and it is a shame. He was very well physically and he has done everything to recover, to be well. "We have taken care of everything, all the details, and this has happened again, but these are football situations and he will come back stronger."
