Manchester City are ready to abandon their pursuit of Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Matheus Nunes during this summer's transfer window. The 24-year-old had joined Wolverhampton Wanderers from Sporting Lisbon in the summer of 2022, accumulating 41 appearances for the club and netting one goal during this period.

Having debuted for the Portugal national team in September 2021, Nunes has participated in a total of 11 matches for his country, marking the inception of his football career. In the previous season, the midfielder engaged in 34 games within the Premier League, with 30 of those as a starter, contributing one goal and a solitary assist to his teammates in the 2022-23 season.

Though Nunes has attracted Manchester City's attention, The Independent reports that the reigning Premier League champions are inclined to withdraw from negotiations with Wolves. The article suggests that if Wolves' asking price for the midfielder exceeds a certain threshold, Manchester City will opt to discontinue pursuing the deal.

Initially, Manchester City tendered an offer of £47 million for Nunes earlier this month, as Pep Guardiola sought to reinforce his midfield options prior to the transfer window's closure.

Concurrently, another report indicates that Wolves are seeking a sum exceeding £60 million for the Portuguese player – a substantially higher value than Manchester City's initial bid.

Following the collapse of a potential transfer for West Ham United's Lucas Paqueta due to external factors beyond the English champions' control, Guardiola's team redirected their focus towards acquiring Nunes. Allegedly, Manchester City and West Ham United were nearing an £80 million agreement for the Brazilian player. However, the English club decided to distance themselves from Paqueta, who currently faces investigations concerning alleged betting breaches.

Given Kevin De Bruyne's hamstring injury during Manchester City's Premier League opener against Burnley on August 11, Guardiola is in dire need of capable midfield reinforcements.
