The ECB has officially announced that Ben Stokes will be rejoining England's one-day international squad for their upcoming matches. Stokes has been absent from 50-over contests representing his nation since his appearance against South Africa at Chester-le-Street, his home ground, in July 2022.

However, the 32-year-old has been enticed back into the limited-overs arena, similar to his return to T20 cricket last year, in preparation for the impending World Cup in India. England's preparation for the tournament will involve a series of four ODIs against New Zealand, with the initial match set for September 8.

In addition to Stokes shifting his focus to the condensed format of the game, Surrey's fast bowler Gus Atkinson has earned a spot in the squad and is poised to make his debut on the international stage. The 15-member group doesn't yield any other surprises, with a total of six players who featured in the Ashes series being selected for the series against New Zealand.

Meanwhile, the T20 squad designated for the four clashes against the same New Zealand opponents, spanning from August 30 to September 5, introduces three newcomers: Atkinson, Josh Tongue, and John Turner.

Atkinson has recently impressed in The Hundred tournament, amassing nine wickets across four matches. Tongue, on the other hand, aims to build on his previous performances for the national team, having taken five wickets during the second Ashes Test against Australia.

Turner, a 22-year-old originally from South Africa, might be on the cusp of his international debut after only a dozen domestic T20 fixtures. Within these, he has impressively secured 22 wickets, achieving a striking average of one wicket every 11 balls.
