Aston Villa are reportedly contemplating the idea of pursuing Barcelona defender Clement Lenglet. The team from the West Midlands has had a positive start to the season, both in the Premier League and the Europa Conference League playoff round.

With six points gained from three Premier League matches and a convincing 5-0 victory over Hibernian in the first leg of the continental competition, Unai Emery's squad is close to advancing to the group stages. However, due to injuries sustained by Tyrone Mings and Emiliano Buendia, Villa finds itself in a situation where they need to be active in the final days of the summer transfer window.

A substantial amount of over £30 million has been generated from the sales of academy graduates Aaron Ramsey and Cameron Archer. These funds could potentially contribute to acquiring new players. Despite the significant expenditure on new signings in the last three transfer windows, the club officials might be inclined to seek value for money in the current market.

As per transfer expert Fabrizio Romano's tweet, Aston Villa is contemplating the possibility of securing Lenglet, potentially on a permanent basis.

Lenglet, a French player, is currently back at Barcelona after spending the 2022-23 season on loan at Tottenham Hotspur. During his loan spell, he made 32 starts and three substitute appearances across various competitions.

Initially, there were expectations that the 28-year-old would join Spurs on a permanent transfer. However, the anticipated move did not materialize. Barcelona is keen to offload the left-sided center-back as they strive to address their well-documented financial challenges. Recent reports linked Lenglet to a potential return to Sevilla, a club he represented between January 2017 and July 2018, and it's been suggested that this is his preferred destination.

This was the situation until Villa seemingly included Lenglet in their shortlist of potential recruits. Barcelona is reportedly anticipating the player's departure before the upcoming Friday's transfer deadline.

Despite having the option to move to Saudi Arabia, Lenglet is reportedly uninterested in relocating to the Middle East at this point in his career.
