Reports suggest that Arsenal is currently leading the race to secure the services of Brentford striker Ivan Toney, placing them ahead of Chelsea in the pursuit. Toney's future at Brentford has been a subject of intense transfer speculation, especially as he nears the end of an eight-month ban for breaching betting regulations, set to conclude in the middle of the next month.

Despite not having played a competitive match since May, Toney has become a target for several Premier League giants. Lee Dykes, Brentford's technical director, recently acknowledged that Toney could be departing from the club "very shortly."

According to the Independent, Arsenal is in the forefront to secure the signature of the English international. While Chelsea is considered a strong contender in the race for Toney, they might face challenges in completing the deal due to concerns related to Financial Fair Play.

It's reported that Chelsea may need to offload players before they can make a move for Toney, who is expected to command an initial fee of £60 million, potentially rising to £80 million with add-ons.

Arsenal, despite also grappling with Financial Fair Play considerations, could still work out a deal by potentially compromising on their goal of making four January signings. The Gunners are said to be interested in recruiting two full-backs, a midfielder, and a centre-forward when the transfer window opens next month.

There's a belief that Arsenal's performance compared to Chelsea this season could make them a more attractive option for potential signings.
