Antonio Conte, the former head coach of Chelsea, Inter Milan, and Tottenham Hotspur, has reportedly declined an opportunity to take over as the new manager of Napoli, replacing Rudi Garcia.

After the departure of the successful Serie A title-winning manager Luciano Spalletti during the summer, Garcia, who previously managed Lyon and Al-Nassr, faced a challenging task in Naples.

However, Garcia's stint in charge of Napoli hasn't gone as smoothly as expected. His team has managed only five wins in their first ten matches of the season, including four wins, two draws, and two losses in Serie A. This has placed Napoli in fifth position, seven points behind AC Milan, the league leaders.

In the Champions League, Napoli barely won their first game against Braga but suffered a 3-2 defeat at home to Real Madrid in the second matchday. On top of performance issues, Garcia had an infamous clash with star striker Victor Osimhen during a game against Bologna. Despite these challenges, Garcia is not likely to resign voluntarily, which means that Napoli's president, Aurelio de Laurentiis, is considering options, including a potential mutual contract termination or dismissal.

Although Garcia remains in his position for now, it was reported that Napoli held a meeting with Antonio Conte to explore the possibility of him taking over from Garcia. Unfortunately, these discussions did not yield positive results, and no agreement was reached between De Laurentiis and Conte.

The 54-year-old Conte has been without a managerial role since his abrupt departure from Tottenham Hotspur in March. He openly criticized his team after they let a 3-1 lead slip in a 3-3 draw with Southampton. Conte has been patient in his search for the right opportunity and recently indicated on his Instagram story that he wants to spend more time with his family after a prolonged period of separation while managing Tottenham. As a result, he is in no hurry to return to coaching.

"There are persistent transfer rumours that link me to important clubs, but I reiterate that for now there is only the desire to continue to sit still and enjoy the family," Conte wrote.
