Roma has officially named their former captain, Daniele de Rossi, as the new manager following the dismissal of Jose Mourinho. Mourinho was let go on Tuesday morning due to overseeing the team's poorest start to a Serie A season in 21 years, leaving them in ninth place after 20 games.

After an unsuccessful attempt to approach former Inter Milan and Juventus boss Antonio Conte, Roma swiftly engaged in discussions to bring back club legend De Rossi to Stadio Olimpico.

The 40-year-old's return has now been confirmed, and he has signed a six-month contract until the end of the season. De Rossi, who enjoyed a remarkable 17-year playing career with Roma, scoring 63 goals and providing 60 assists in 616 appearances, is second only to Francesco Totti (786) in terms of matches played for the club.

Having won two Coppa Italias and one Supercoppa Italiana at Stadio Olimpico, De Rossi was also part of Italy's victorious World Cup 2006 and Euro 2012 squads. AS Roma is delighted to announce that Daniele De Rossi will serve as head coach until June 30, 2024.

After leaving Roma in 2019, De Rossi spent six months with Boca Juniors before retiring from playing in January 2020. He then joined Roberto Mancini's Italy staff as a technical coach.

De Rossi's first managerial experience came with Serie B team SPAL in the 2022-23 season, but he was dismissed after just 17 games, managing three wins during his tenure.
