Pep Guardiola had some glowing words of praise for Rico Lewis after Manchester City's impressive 3-1 Champions League victory over RB Leipzig. The young talent, who primarily plays as a full-back but has been showcasing his versatility since his debut in Guardiola's squad last season, was given a central midfield role alongside the reliable Rodri at the Red Bull Arena.

In this match, the 18-year-old played a crucial role in City's opening goal. He displayed excellent teamwork with Bernardo Silva down the right wing, then made a dynamic run into the box and delivered a precise cross to fellow academy graduate Phil Foden, who skillfully found the back of the net with a first-time finish.

Although Leipzig managed to equalize just three minutes into the second half through Lois Openda, late goals from Julian Alvarez and Jeremy Doku, both of whom were inspired substitutions by Guardiola, secured maximum points for the Citizens. This victory marked City's return to form after consecutive domestic defeats.

While Alvarez and Doku's impact was undeniably crucial to City's success, Rico Lewis stood out as a remarkable performer throughout the entire 90 minutes. He made significant contributions at both ends of the pitch and demonstrated remarkable composure and skill when in possession of the ball. Guardiola, who has worked with legendary players like Lionel Messi over his illustrious managerial career, didn't hold back his admiration for Lewis.

In an interview with TNT Sports, Guardiola discussed Lewis's outstanding performance, stating:

"What a player. What a player. 18 years old. I have been a manager for 14, 15 years training unbelievable players.

"To find a player like him playing in the pockets, how he has to move in holding midfield, full-back coming inside moving in the spaces – he is one of the best I ever trained by far."

Guardiola added: "He is a humble guy, doesn't talk much, but has the appreciation of all his mates.

"He didn't play much this season - last season he was a key point and helped us understand what we should do in our build up. Today was proof again. This season he hasn't played as much but he is going to play a lot."
