PSG has been linked with Dembele for some time, and they had considered signing him in 2022 when his future at Barcelona was uncertain. Chelsea also showed interest in the player during that period. Dembele had a brief period of being a free agent last year, but he ultimately agreed to a two-year renewal with Barcelona due to their financial difficulties.
While Barcelona had hoped to keep Dembele until 2027, head coach Xavi has not ruled out the possibility of the 26-year-old leaving the club this summer. After getting permission from Barcelona to talk to Dembele, Fabrizio Romano now reports that PSG has reached a verbal agreement with the player's agent for a long-term deal until the summer of 2028.
PSG has informed Barcelona about this agreement through a letter, and they are now making plans to finalize Dembele's transfer to the club.
Dembele's decision to leave Barcelona is believed to be influenced by PSG's ambitious sporting project. During his time at Barcelona, he has been plagued by injuries since his €135m (£115.6m) move from Borussia Dortmund six years ago. When fit, Dembele has been a valuable player for Barcelona, scoring 40 goals and providing 43 assists in 185 matches.
Despite failed attempts to offload him in January 2022 when he entered the final six months of his previous contract, Dembele managed to revive his career under Xavi's management. He recorded 13 assists in the 2021-22 La Liga season and finished the 2022-23 campaign with eight goals and nine assists from 35 games across all competitions.
