Due to his limited playing time, there were strong links to a move to West Ham United last summer, but nothing materialized. However, Maguire saw more action in the 2023-24 season, starting 18 out of 22 Premier League matches.
Despite his increased involvement, there has been talk of Maguire being part of a defensive overhaul at United. Raphael Varane has already left, and both Victor Lindelof and Willy Kambwala are expected to follow. Maguire's contract runs out at the end of next season, and he was also considered for a summer exit.
According to the Daily Star, though, Ten Hag is inclined to keep Maguire rather than sell him for a low fee. The manager has been impressed with Maguire’s attitude, especially after he nearly left last summer but stayed to prove his worth.
Maguire has continued to show his commitment, even taking a United physio with him on holiday to Portugal to ensure he stays fit for the new season. He's expected to play in United's first pre-season friendly against Rosenborg on Monday.
While Maguire will remain at the club, United still plans to bolster their defense. They are reportedly working on deals for Bayern Munich's Matthijs de Ligt, Everton's Jarrad Branthwaite, and Lille's Leny Yoro. These new signings would likely compete for a starting spot alongside Lisandro Martinez, meaning Maguire might have to accept a role as a squad player rather than a regular starter.
