Chelsea is reportedly open to parting ways with Kovacic as they aim to balance their financial books and trim their large first-team squad. Earlier this month, Man City received permission from Chelsea to hold talks with Kovacic, and it has been reported that the midfielder has already agreed on personal terms for a move to the Etihad Stadium.
The pursuit of the Croatia international has intensified, with The Athletic reporting that Manchester City has now submitted a written bid of £25m. While previous reports suggested that Chelsea was seeking a fee closer to £35m, both clubs are eager to find a resolution as Kovacic has expressed his desire to join the treble-winning side.
Man City is hopeful of finalizing the deal before the end of the month. Kovacic recently represented Croatia in the UEFA Nations League final, where they suffered a defeat against Spain.
Manager Pep Guardiola has reportedly been an admirer of Kovacic since his time at Real Madrid, and he is eager to see the transfer through. Kovacic spent three seasons in Real Madrid's first team, winning a total of six trophies, including three consecutive Champions League titles and one La Liga title.
After initially joining Chelsea on loan from Real Madrid in 2018, Kovacic made his move permanent a year later. Since then, he has made 221 appearances for the club in all competitions, scoring six goals and providing 15 assists. Despite his contributions, Kovacic is yet to win a domestic honor in English football but has secured the Champions League, Europa League, UEFA Super Cup, and FIFA Club World Cup during his time at Stamford Bridge.
Manchester City has targeted Kovacic as a summer acquisition, particularly with club captain Ilkay Gundogan's future at the Etihad uncertain.
