Liverpool have reportedly expressed their interest in staying updated on the situation surrounding Atalanta midfielder Teun Koopmeiners. New head coach Arne Slot has had a strong pre-season with the club, remaining unbeaten in five friendly matches as they prepare for the 2024-25 campaign.
However, Slot has yet to bring in any new players, something that’s expected to change soon as Liverpool looks to strengthen their squad, particularly in defense and midfield.
Recently, Real Sociedad's Martin Zubimendi was considered Liverpool’s top target for the midfield position. There was initial optimism about bringing the Euro 2024 winner to Anfield, but on Monday, Zubimendi informed the club that he would remain with his boyhood team.
While Liverpool could choose to rely on young talent Stefan Bajcetic, they have the funds available to pursue another midfielder if they wish.
According to Football Insider, Liverpool has shown clear interest in signing Koopmeiners before the summer transfer window closes. The Dutch international, who has spent the last three years with Atalanta, is reportedly eager for a new challenge.
During his time in Italy, Koopmeiners has contributed 29 goals and 15 assists in 129 appearances and played a key role in Atalanta's Europa League victory in the 2023-24 season.
Despite this success, his time at the club seems to be ending on a sour note. Atalanta’s head coach, Gian Piero Gasperini, recently revealed that Koopmeiners has been refusing to train, as he is keen on joining Juventus. A move to Juventus could happen if the club can meet Atalanta's asking price of over €50m (£42.67m), but negotiations are still ongoing.
Liverpool is closely monitoring the situation, though Koopmeiners’ preference for Juventus might be a concern. Additionally, he might not be the tough, defensive midfielder Liverpool ideally wants to add. Nevertheless, the report suggests that Slot is a big fan of Koopmeiners, making the deal a realistic option if Juventus fails to meet Atalanta’s demands.
