Varela has appeared in 14 Primeira Liga matches for Porto this season, contributing with one goal and two assists from his deep-lying midfield position. Prior to joining Porto, he spent over three years with Boca Juniors' first team, making 111 appearances and scoring two goals.
According to reports from Bolavip, Liverpool has reached out to Porto regarding Varela's potential transfer as they aim to strengthen their midfield options. The Reds are reportedly looking to reinforce their squad after facing challenges during the winter transfer window.
However, securing Varela's signature won't come cheap for Liverpool, as the 22-year-old has a hefty release clause of £59.7 million at Porto. Additionally, Boca Juniors negotiated a sell-on clause in their agreement with Porto, entitling them to receive more than £10 million from any future transfer involving Varela.
Varela's current contract with Porto runs until the summer of 2028, ensuring that Porto won't lose one of their key assets for a bargain fee anytime soon. Manchester City is also reportedly interested in Varela, as Pep Guardiola's side continues to explore talent in the South American market.
