Lyon has officially announced the departure of their manager, Laurent Blanc, stating it was a result of a "mutual agreement." Blanc, the former France and Paris Saint-Germain head coach, assumed the reins at the Groupama Stadium in October 2022, succeeding Peter Bosz. However, his tenure was short-lived, spanning just 37 games before his departure.

Under Blanc's leadership, Lyon struggled in the 2022-23 Ligue 1 season, finishing in seventh place. They missed European qualification by a margin of five points and trailed behind Marseille, who claimed the third position by an 11-point margin. While they did reach the semi-finals of the previous year's Coupe de France, Lyon's hopes of victory were dashed by Nantes. Blanc also presided over a disastrous start to the 2023-24 season.

After just four games, Lyon finds themselves at the bottom of the 18-team table with a mere one point earned. They suffered defeats to Paris Saint-Germain, Montpellier HSC, and Strasbourg, with a goalless draw against Nice. Following a humbling 4-1 home loss to Montpellier, Blanc openly suggested that a managerial change might be necessary to lift the team from their slump, though he maintained he wasn't actively seeking to vacate his position.

Blanc continued to lead the team in the subsequent draw with Nice, but Lyon's woes deepened with another 4-1 defeat, this time at the hands of reigning champions PSG, just before the international break.

After the final whistle in that match, Lyon's players faced stern criticism from a member of their ultras supporters group, leaving Blanc's position hanging by a thread.

As anticipated, Lyon has now parted ways with the 57-year-old manager and his coaching staff. The club, however, emphasized that the decision was mutual rather than a unilateral club choice to dismiss him.
