Ex-Man United midfielder Anderson has been told he has to cough up around £142,000 in unpaid child support or face a month in jail back home in Brazil.

A court in Porto Alegre ruled earlier this month that the 37-year-old, who lifted four Premier League titles and the Champions League with United, will serve 30 days behind bars if he doesn’t pay up.

If there’s space inside he’ll be under a closed regime, basically locked up. If not, he could get a semi-open regime which means he’d be allowed out during the day to work or study but still have to return to confinement at night.

Nobody’s saying which of his kids this is about, but Anderson is known to have nine children. His lawyer has confirmed the case involves minors.

On the pitch Anderson was never the superstar many thought he could be, but he became a bit of a cult hero at Old Trafford.

He made over 180 appearances after joining from Porto in 2007, scored nine goals and had a knack for showing up in big games with a smile on his face. After United he had a short loan at Fiorentina and then saw out most of the rest of his career back in Brazil.
