The English Premier League 2022/2023 is around the corner, and if the dramatic finale of the recently concluded 2021/2022 season is anything to go by, then fans of the EPL around the world are in for a treat. Let's check out all the 20 teams that are set to do battle in the coming weeks

Arsenal

Arsenal was one of the 22 founding Premier League teams and has maintained its position since then. They have recorded three titles in 1997-1998, 2001-2002, and the most recent win came in the 2003-2004 season. They are one of only four clubs that have multiple League titles. Arsenal finished 5th in the most recently completed season.

Aston Villa

Aston Villa is another of the 22 founding teams, though they have bounced around the divisions. They have not recorded a title yet. Aston Villa returned to the top flight by winning promotion to Premier League in 2019-2020. They improved on last season, finishing 14th during the 2021-2022 season.

Bournemouth

Bournemouth initially made their debut in the Premier League during the 2015-2016 season and lasted for five seasons, being relegated after an 18th place finish during the 2019-2020 season. They return to the Premier League after two seasons in the Championship, having finished second last season and earning automatic promotion.

Brentford

Brentford made the jump to the Premier League for the first time in their history and as the 50th team to play in the Premier League. Brentford has one other top-flight stint in club history dating back to 1935 through 1947. Since then, the majority of their time has been spent in Tier 3 but has been on a steady upward trend since 2008 until their promotion. They finished 13th in their inaugural season.

Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton is a relative newcomer to the top flight appearing in only its 6th season in the Premier League (though all have been consecutive). They were promoted into the top tier for the first time after finishing in 2nd place in the Championship in the 2016-2017 season. They set a new record for high finish last season, climbing all the way to 9th place and only five points out of the running for an appearance in the Europa Conference League.

Chelsea

Chelsea is another of the 22 founding teams as has maintained their place in the top flight since the League’s establishment. They are the second most successful team with five League titles: 2004-2005, 2005-2006, 2009-2010, 2014-2015, and the most recent in the 2016-2017 season. Chelsea finished 3rd in the 2021-2022 season.

Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace is another of the 22 founding members of the league, although later that season they would be the first team relegated. Crystal Palace has been relegated in 4 of its 11 seasons in the league, including three times in the first six years of the league. Since then their position has stabilized since their return to it in 2013-2014, and this will be their 10th consecutive season in the Premier League. Their best finish came in 2014-2015 with a 10th place finish. They finished the 2021-2022 season in 12th place.

Everton

Everton is another of the 22 founding members, and they have remained a constant fixture since the league’s founding. Everton, while remaining in the top division has held almost every place, except for relegation places, in it. Their best finish is fourth-place achieved in the 2004-2005 season. They finished the 2021-2022 season in 16th place, securing safety with a dramatic come-from-behind victory on the final day of the season.

Fulham

Fulham returns to the Premier League as champions of the Championship after only one season away. This will be their 16th season in the top flight, though they have failed to stay up more than one season at a time since a 13-season run ended in relegation after the 2013-2014 season. Their best finish during that run was a 7th place finish during the 2008-2009 season, but their last three seasons have seen two 19th place finishes (2013-2014 & 2018-2019) and 18th (2020-2021).

Leeds United

Leeds United is another of the 22 founding members of the Premier League and was consistent among the top-tier teams until relegation in 2003-2004. Leeds’ best finish as a Premier League team was third place, accomplished in the 1999-2000 season. After spending 16 years outside the top flight, they returned after winning the Championship in the 2019-2020 season. Last season, they barely avoided relegation, winning on the final day of the season to finish in 17th place.

Leicester City

Leicester City, while not a founding member, has resided in the Premier League for about half of the league’s existence. They are among the seven teams to record a league title, winning it only one season removed from a 14th place finish. Leicester City’s most recent promotion to the Premier League occurred in 2013-2014 when they won promotion as champions of the Championship. They ended the 2021-2022 season in 8th place.

Liverpool

Liverpool is another of the 22 founding members and has remained in the top half ever since. Liverpool has finished in the top 5 for 19 of their 28 seasons in the top flight. They won their lone Premier League title after the 2019-2020 season, breaking what has become a stranglehold on the top spot by Manchester City. Last season, they finished 2nd behind Manchester City but well ahead of Chelsea.

Manchester City

Manchester City is another of the 22 founding teams experiencing relegation twice, missing six seasons of top-tier soccer. However, they have also managed to be the third most successful Premier League team with six league titles, including four of the last five. Their last promotion was in 2001-2002 by winning the Championship. They ended last season at the top of the table after some late dramatics on the last day of the season against Aston Villa.

Manchester United

Manchester United is another of the 22 founding members finishing outside the top 5 only three times. They are the most successful Premier League team (by a sizable margin) with 13 league titles. Their most recent title came in the 2012-2013 season. They finished the 2021-2022 season in 6th place.

Newcastle United

Newcastle United, while not being a founding member has spent all but three seasons in the league. They have suffered relegation only twice and were most recently promoted to the top tier in 2016-2017 after winning the Championship. They have accomplished their club-best position of 2nd twice, in 1995-1996 and 1996-1997. They finished the 2021-2022 season in 11th place.

Nottingham Forest

Forest returns to the Premier League after a record 23 years away, having last played in Premier League during the 1998-1999 season. They were a founding member of the Premier League, though they finished last during the inaugural 1992-1993 season and yo-yoed back and forth, participating in six of the first eight seasons. They return to the top flight fresh off a win in the Championship Play-off, defeating Huddersfield Town after finishing fourth during the regular season. Their best Premier League finish was a surprising 3rd place finish during the 1994-1995 season.

Southampton

Southampton is another of the 22 founding members of the league where they have remained for the majority of the league’s existence. Despite remaining in the league fairly consistently, they have only finished in the top-half seven times. Their best finish is a 6th place finish occurring in 2015-2016. They finished the 2021-2022 season in 15th place.

Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham Hotspur is another of the 22 founding members of the league and has remained in the top-flight since its inception. They have finished outside of the top 10 only four times and their best result is a 2nd place finish in the 2016-2017 season. They finished in 4th place in the 2021-2022 season.

West Ham United

Their best place finish came in the 1998-1999 season, finishing the season in fifth. West Ham finished 7th in the 2021-2022 season and will be returning to continental football for the second season in a row.

Wolverhampton Wanderers

Wolves have spent 8 prior seasons in the Premier League, suffering relegation twice. Prior to their most recent promotion from winning the Championship in 2017-2018, they had never finished higher than 15th. Their best finishes have come in the 2018-2019 and 2019-2020 seasons, finishing both in 7th position. Last season, they finished in 10th place.
