Initially, Chelsea had optimistic hopes that the injury wasn't severe, and initial reports indicated that he might only be sidelined for a few weeks rather than months. However, the club has now confirmed that Nkunku needed surgery for the problem, and as a result, he is expected to be absent for the first four months of the upcoming season.
An official statement from the club confirmed this;
"Nkunku has sustained a knee injury which will rule the forward out for an extended period,"
"The 25-year-old has undergone an operation and will now begin a rehabilitation programme with the club's medical department."
Nkunku had a promising start to his time at Chelsea, finding the net in three out of his initial five matches for the club during their pre-season tour in the United States.
Unfortunately, it seems he won't be back in action until December at the earliest, which could result in him being absent for at least 13 Premier League matches, as well as the initial stages of the EFL Cup.
