According to reports, Chelsea is eyeing Borussia Monchengladbach defender Nico Elvedi as a potential signing in the upcoming January transfer window. The news follows the confirmation earlier this week that Reece James sustained a significant hamstring injury during the 2-0 defeat against Everton, with expectations that the club captain will be sidelined until at least February, marking another setback for manager Mauricio Pochettino.

With Chelsea facing their third defeat in four Premier League games and currently positioned 12th in the standings, there are indications that Pochettino is keen to make moves in the transfer market next month.

The manager is reportedly seeking reinforcements in various positions, including a new centre-back, central midfielder, and central forward. Additionally, Pochettino aims to enhance the physical presence of the team, especially in situations where they struggle to assert themselves in games and defend set pieces.

According to reports from TEAMtalk, Nico Elvedi is among the players on Chelsea's shortlist for the January window. The Swiss international was previously linked with Wolverhampton Wanderers in the summer, but Fosun International, the owners, redirected their focus to adhere to Financial Fair Play regulations. Elvedi, who can play as a right-back or centre-back, extended his contract in September, tying him to Monchengladbach until the end of the 2026-27 campaign.

Despite Monchengladbach's current 10th position in the Bundesliga table with the second-worst defensive record, Elvedi has been a consistent presence in the team. Chelsea had reportedly considered him in discussions about Bayer Leverkusen's Jonathan Tah, who shares the same agent.

Although Elvedi was available for around £10 million in the summer, the latest report suggests that Monchengladbach would now seek closer to £30 million if Chelsea decides to make a bid for the player, who represented Switzerland at the 2022 World Cup.
