Brighton has rejected an £8 million bid from Italian club Napoli for Scottish midfielder Billy Gilmour. Insiders suggest this was just an initial offer, indicating that Napoli might return with a higher bid, as they are confident they can secure the transfer.

Gilmour has traveled to Japan with Brighton for a two-match tour. The team will play against Kashima Antlers on July 24 and Tokyo Verdy on July 28, aiming to capitalize on the popularity of Japanese international Kaoru Mitoma, who has become a key player for the club.

Last season, Gilmour started 24 Premier League games and made 41 appearances in all competitions. He joined Brighton in 2022 for £7.5 million and has two years remaining on his contract.

Napoli, led by former Chelsea manager Antonio Conte, finished 10th last season after winning the Serie A title in 2023 for the first time in 33 years.

In other news, Brighton is close to signing Paraguay international Diego Gomez from MLS club Inter Miami. Gomez, who will join Paraguay’s Olympic squad later this month, would not be able to join Brighton until after the tournament. Sources indicate the deal is nearing completion, with a transfer fee expected to be around $18 million (£13.9 million).
