Arsenal look set to land a cut-price alternative to Real Madrid’s Dean Huijsen, with a deal for Valencia’s Cristhian Mosquera nearing completion. Despite not being as well-known as Huijsen, the 21-year-old Mosquera is seen as a smart pickup, especially at just £13 million up front. Thanks to the work of Andrea Berta behind the scenes, Arsenal may avoid paying Mosquera’s full £17.3 million release clause, even if all add-ons are triggered.

A verbal agreement is said to be in place between the two clubs, and the highly rated Spanish defender could be announced soon. As fans await confirmation, attention is already turning to what shirt number Mosquera might take at the Emirates.

He’s worn the number 3 shirt at Valencia, a number now vacant at Arsenal following Kieran Tierney’s departure. While there was speculation that youngster Myles Lewis-Skelly could inherit it, he’ll reportedly stick with his current 49, which holds sentimental value linked to the Invincibles.

That leaves Mosquera with a few appealing options. The number 3 shirt, though traditionally worn by left-backs, has a history with defenders like Bacary Sagna, who wore it proudly as a right-back. Alternatively, the number 5 shirt is now free following Thomas Partey’s exit, a number worn by Arsenal legends like Tony Adams and Martin Keown.

If the pressure of a historic number feels too much too soon, Mosquera could opt for something lower profile like 18, or other available numbers such as 20, 25, or 26. Still, given his track record with the number 3 for both Valencia and Spain's Under-21s, it seems the most likely choice for Arsenal’s newest signing.
