Alvaro Morata has been named the new captain of Spain's national team, taking over from Sergio Busquets who retired from international duty after the 2022 World Cup. Spain's new head coach Luis de la Fuente made significant changes in his first squad selection since taking over from Luis Enrique.

Only eleven players have remained from the Qatar World Cup, and Morata is one of them, having scored 30 goals for his country. Morata will lead Spain in their opening two Euro 2024 qualification matches against Norway and Scotland, while Dani Carvajal, who has 33 national team appearances, has been named the new vice-captain.
