Southampton has reached an agreement with Arsenal to sign England goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale for a deal that could rise to £25 million. The 26-year-old is expected to join Southampton before the transfer window closes on Friday, with an initial payment of £18 million and an additional £7 million in potential add-ons.

Southampton manager Russell Martin expressed his excitement about the potential signing following his team’s 5-3 victory over Cardiff in the Carabao Cup. Speaking to BBC Radio Solent, he said, "If it happens, it’s very, very exciting. But we'll have to wait and see. I’m sure we’ll talk about it at some point if and when it happens."

Ramsdale, who was Arsenal's first-choice goalkeeper during the 2022-23 season when they finished second in the Premier League, lost his spot to David Raya. Raya initially joined Arsenal on loan from Brentford, and his move has since been made permanent. Consequently, Ramsdale made just six league appearances last season.

Wolverhampton Wanderers had also shown interest in signing Ramsdale but withdrew from the negotiations, deeming the deal too costly.

Ramsdale, who has five caps for England, joined Arsenal from Sheffield United in 2021 for £24 million. Over his time with Arsenal, he made 78 Premier League appearances.

As Ramsdale prepares to join Southampton, the club is looking to bounce back after a challenging start to their Premier League campaign. The Saints, who have lost their first two matches since returning to the top flight, currently have 34-year-old Alex McCarthy as their starting goalkeeper.

Southampton's next match is an away game against Brentford on Saturday.
