Arsenal have bolstered their squad by signing Spanish midfielder Mikel Merino from Real Sociedad in a deal worth up to £31.6 million. The 28-year-old has committed to a four-year contract, with an option to extend for an additional year. Arsenal agreed to pay an initial £27.4 million, with a further £4.2 million in potential add-ons.

Manager Mikel Arteta expressed his enthusiasm for the new signing, stating, "Mikel is a player who will bring us immense quality with his experience and versatility."

Merino was instrumental in Spain's victory at Euro 2024, where he played in all seven matches and secured a dramatic late winner in extra time against Germany in the quarter-final.

Merino is Arsenal’s third acquisition in this transfer window, following the arrivals of Italy's Riccardo Calafiori and Spanish goalkeeper David Raya, who joined the club permanently after a successful loan spell from Brentford.

Arteta further praised Merino, saying, "Mikel will significantly strengthen our squad with his technical skills and his strong, positive character. As we all saw this summer, Mikel is a winner, his performances in the Euros were key to Spain's success."

Known for his ability to play as a deeper-lying midfielder, Merino is expected to complement Declan Rice in midfield and provide competition for spots alongside Jorginho, Thomas Partey, and Martin Odegaard.

Merino is no stranger to the Premier League, having spent a season at Newcastle before joining Real Sociedad in 2018. During the 2019-20 season, he played alongside Odegaard, who was then on loan from Real Madrid. Last season, Merino made 45 appearances across all competitions, scoring eight goals, and his 28 international caps underscore his experience at the highest level.
