Although Real Madrid wasn't at full strength, they still fielded top talent like Kylian Mbappe. However, they struggled to create chances, largely due to the outstanding performances of Konate and Bradley. Bradley, in particular, was arguably the best player on the pitch.
Unfortunately, the night ended on a sour note for Liverpool. Bradley limped off with what appeared to be a hamstring injury, while Konate was seen hobbling after the final whistle, grimacing with a suspected knee issue. Bradley’s absence could be a blow, especially as he’s proven to be a reliable backup for Trent Alexander-Arnold, who is just returning to full fitness after his own injury spell.
Konate’s situation is equally concerning. Despite previous injury setbacks under Jurgen Klopp, the Frenchman has been a key player this season. Since stepping into the lineup in August, Konate has been a dominant force, boasting an 85.7% aerial win rate—the highest among defenders in the Premier League. Some have even argued he’s been the league’s best centre-back this season.
Liverpool currently sit atop the Premier League, eight points clear of Manchester City, who visit Anfield on Sunday. City are in poor form, with no wins in their last six games across all competitions. A Liverpool win this weekend could open up an 11-point gap, making it tough for Pep Guardiola’s side to close the gap.
However, Liverpool might face the crucial clash with a patched-up defense. If Konate is unavailable, Joe Gomez is likely to partner Virgil van Dijk at the back. While Gomez has performed well against physical players like Erling Haaland in the past, Konate’s aerial dominance and physicality would be sorely missed. Combined with a not-yet-fully-fit Alexander-Arnold, Liverpool’s defense will be tested against City’s attacking threat.
