Greenwood's electric start to the season has seen him score five goals in just three Ligue 1 matches, equaling a record set by Mario Balotelli with Nice in 2016. His brace effectively sealed the win for Marseille, especially after Toulouse’s Frank Magri was sent off in the 27th minute for a reckless trip on Marseille’s Geoffrey Kondogbia.
Despite dominating the game, Marseille missed several opportunities to extend their lead further. Their third goal came courtesy of an own-goal by Toulouse's Charlie Cresswell in the second half. Toulouse managed to pull one back late in the game through Shavy Babicka, but it was little more than a consolation.
Greenwood has quickly made an impact at Marseille, even after a controversial move from Manchester United this summer that saw him booed by fans during his debut. In that debut, he also scored twice in a 5-1 victory over Brest.
His goal-scoring prowess continued when he netted in a draw against Reims last week, making him the first Marseille player since Dimitri Payet in 2013 to score three goals in the first two games of the season.
Marseille now sit at the top of the Ligue 1 table, leading Nantes on goal difference. Nantes also secured a 3-1 win over Montpellier, with Matthis Albine, Moses Simon, and Mostafa Mohamed all getting on the scoresheet.
Meanwhile, Brest earned their first win of the season, thrashing winless Saint-Etienne 4-0, thanks to goals from Mahdi Camara, Romain Del Castillo, Ludovic Ajorque, and Kenny Lala.
