Germany secured the bronze medal in the Olympic women's football at Paris 2024 by defeating world champions Spain. The decisive moment came in the 65th minute when Giulia Gwinn coolly slotted home a penalty after being fouled by Spain's goalkeeper Cata Coll.

In a tense finish, Spain was given a last-minute lifeline with a penalty just seven seconds from the end, but Alexia Putellas was denied by a brilliant save from German goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger.

The first half was relatively quiet, with Spain's Aitana Bonmati coming closest to scoring when she hit the woodwork just before halftime. Despite dominating possession in the later stages and creating several chances, Spain couldn't find the equalizer to take the match into extra time.

With this victory in Lyon, Germany claimed their fourth Olympic bronze medal, having previously won in 2000, 2004, and 2008.

The gold-medal match between Brazil and the United States is set to take place at Parc des Princes on Saturday.
