Tottenham Hotspur attacker James Maddison has reportedly been cut from the England squad for this summer's European Championship, with the 27-year-old already leaving the camp.

Maddison was initially included in Gareth Southgate's preliminary squad and played in Monday's friendly against Bosnia-Herzegovina, coming on as a second-half substitute for Cole Palmer. He was also expected to feature in Friday's match against Iceland.

However, The Athletic reports that Maddison has now left the Three Lions camp after being informed by Southgate that he will not be part of the final squad for the European Championship.

Maddison has earned seven caps for England and made 30 appearances for Tottenham last season, scoring four goals and providing nine assists after moving from Leicester City. Southgate needs to reduce his squad to 26 by the June 7 deadline, and it's unclear if any other surprise exclusions will occur.

Although Maddison missed part of last season due to an ankle injury, he was a key player for Spurs when fit, contributing four goals and nine assists in the Premier League.

According to Sky Sports News, Southgate now considers both Palmer and Eberechi Eze ahead of Maddison in the pecking order, prompting this decision. With Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden certain to start, and Declan Rice and Harry Kane securing midfield and attack positions, there wasn't an obvious spot for Maddison in the starting XI.
