Erling Haaland made history in the Champions League by setting a new record that was previously held by Kylian Mbappe. He achieved this feat by scoring twice in Manchester City's 3-1 victory against Young Boys on Wednesday.

The Citizens faced a tough challenge from the spirited Young Boys team but ultimately secured their win thanks to goals from Haaland (2) and Manuel Akanji. After a goalless first half, Akanji broke the deadlock with a close-range finish just three minutes into the second half, marking his return to Switzerland.

However, the hosts quickly equalized with a lofted finish over Ederson from Meschak Elia. Haaland then put Man City back in the lead by converting a penalty and later added a stunning right-footed finish into the top corner, sealing the victory for Pep Guardiola's side.

As a result, Manchester City is in a strong position to advance to the knockout rounds of the Champions League, leading Group G with a five-point cushion over Young Boys and Red Star Belgrade in third and fourth place, respectively. RB Leipzig is in second place, trailing by three points.

Erling Haaland, at the young age of 23 years and 96 days, became the youngest player ever to reach 37 goals in the Champions League. This remarkable achievement breaks the previous record held by Paris Saint-Germain star Kylian Mbappe, who reached 37 goals at the age of 23 years and 295 days.

Haaland ended a dry spell of five matches and 543 minutes without a Champions League goal to reach this milestone, with his last goal in the competition dating back to a quarter-final second-leg draw against Bayern Munich in April.

Notably, Haaland has scored his 37 Champions League goals in just 33 games, including 14 goals in as many matches for Manchester City, 15 goals in 13 games for Borussia Dortmund, and eight goals in six appearances for Red Bull Salzburg.

In the previous season, Haaland won the Champions League Golden Boot award by scoring 12 goals in 11 games. His two goals against Young Boys put him in contention for this prestigious individual accolade once again, as he is just one goal behind seven other players, including his teammate Julian Alvarez and Real Madrid's Jude Bellingham.

Since making his professional debut in 2016, Haaland has been directly involved in 115 goals in his last 100 appearances across all competitions, scoring 96 goals and providing 19 assists. Sixty-three of these goals were scored in 67 games for Manchester City.

Despite facing occasional criticism for dry spells in front of goal this season, Guardiola dismissed it as an attempt to see Haaland fail, highlighting the high expectations surrounding the young striker.

"A lot, a lot. I am so concerned. Honestly I'm so concerned."

The Catalan boss then added: "It is important to have the chances, the people want him to fail. I am sorry but this guy will score goals all his life, with the chances he is an incredible threat.

"The players need the ability to find the pass like Kevin De Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan. But he is going to score until the last day he plays football."
