Several England players are reportedly puzzled by Gareth Southgate's decision to leave Jack Grealish out of the Euro 2024 squad. The 28-year-old enjoyed a successful club season, winning his third Premier League title with Manchester City.

However, on an individual level, Grealish had a mixed season with only 10 starts and 10 substitute appearances in the league, providing just one assist since January. Despite this, Grealish retained his spot in England's 33-player preliminary squad for the friendlies against Bosnia-Herzegovina and Iceland due to his seniority.

In the first friendly, Grealish stood out with a lively second-half performance that helped England secure a 3-0 win at St James' Park. This made him a favorite to be included in the final 26-player squad, but he was one of seven players cut from Southgate's final selection.

According to The Telegraph, there is disappointment and surprise within the squad over Grealish's omission. One senior player reportedly questioned Southgate about why Grealish's skills were not deemed valuable for the tournament in Germany. While there was no argument, the player sought an explanation to relay to the rest of the team.

At a press conference following the squad announcement, Southgate explained his decisions, asserting that he believed his choices were the right ones.
He told reporters: "All the players took the decisions respectfully and all the players believe they should be in, that's why they're all top players with that mindset.

"We have some players that have performed extremely well this season and other players have had stronger seasons. In the attacking positions we're blessed with a lot of options and Madders and Jack give us something different.

"They were tough calls, but we back our decisions but recognise we could've gone a different route. It was sad to have to deliver that news to them."

Anthony Gordon had a better season. Grealish was poor
